Don’t forget

Deuteronomy 4:9

My mother inlaw is well along the difficult road of dementia. While she still remembers those people and events she has known for years, she cannot remember what happened an hour ago.

It is very sad to see someone’s memory and well-being deteriorate before our eyes, and we can only hope that we do not suffer the same.

When it comes to remembering the things of God, though, we may as well already have those dreaded symptoms.

We forget that he is good, and we do not recall his provision or his help in times of need and trouble. We doubt that his ways are right and true and worthy of obedience, despite how often he has not failed us before. We do not remember that he is the giver and sustainer of our life and that all we have comes from him.

How quickly we move on from his good work in our life, in the mundane and through the miraculous. Great moments of breakthrough and progress and his intervention are quickly forgotten in the busyness and demands of life.

That is why Moses implores the people of Israel to remember, record and relay God’s words, his ways and his wonders.

It is only by intentionally remembering and frequently speaking of those moments in our life where God has intervened that our faith and the faith of others is built up and strengthened.

Do not succumb to the symptoms of spiritual dementia.

How well do you remember the Word of God, the works of God, and the wonder of God?
