John 13:34-35
The Ten Commandments are often considered the benchmark or basis of good living even though they are impossible to completely fulfil. Even more difficult is Jesus’ command to his disciples to be known for their wholehearted and sacrificial love for each other. We tend to prefer to get stuck on the technicalities, interpretation and enforcement of the commands given to Moses instead of working out ways to better fulfil the command of Jesus. It is unfortunate that followers of Jesus are more known for their religious convictions, holy arguments and deep divisions rather than their love for each other. Love is more difficult and more complicated than simply following a set of rules. It takes work, forgiveness, humility, courage and sacrifice to love one another. Sounds a lot like Jesus, doesn’t it?
