In an attempt to keep the peace and in an effort to find our place it can seem quite natural to try and please people. We all want to feel accepted and approved for who we are but we tend to spend a fair bit of time being somebody else. Conforming to other people’s expectations, living life watching over our shoulder for approval and worrying about what other people think of us is tiring, stressful and futile. Trying to continually shape ourselves to other people’s opinions and expectations actually erases our identity and makes us unstable, insecure and uncertain. As followers of Jesus we are called to please God rather than people. This may seem like an impossible task but it really is quite simple. He wants us to live by faith and become the person he made us to be. His standards, expectations and love remain consistent and constant providing a solid foundation for which to build our lives and a platform for loving people instead of trying to pleasing them.
Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.
