The Story
“I love a good wait” said no one ever! Waiting seems unnatural and is definitely undesirable. Waiting makes us feel weak, vulnerable, as if we are missing out and forgotten. Whether it is waiting in a queue, waiting for a big event, waiting for marriage, waiting to have enough money, waiting for a breakthrough, waiting for a new skill to develop, it all seems like a waste of time. We get impatient with other people, frustrated with the system, disillusioned with our faith. If we have to wait too long we give up and move onto something else, something better, something more attractive and that is happening now. Patience and contentment seem unproductive, dull and boring – why – because it means we don’t get what we want when we want it – it’s all about us.
In God’s kingdom, which is back to front and upside down to this world’s system, patience, endurance, long suffering, contentment and faithfulness are qualities that He wants us to develop and exhibit. They are all qualities that he has and are in those who believe Him through His Spirit. They are all qualities that show our trust and dependence on Him – it’s not about us getting what we want when we want. It’s about us being moulded and shaped into the person that we were created to be for the roles that He has for us maybe not even in this life but the next.
Coming to terms with the value and purpose of waiting is not something that comes easily. My wife and I are in a time of waiting now, waiting for direction, waiting for a more permanent home, waiting for the next step and it’s been over a year now and it seems like forever. With setbacks after setbacks, and what seems like closed door after closed door in various aspects, it is discouraging and disappointing.
We can only hope and pray and wait while being faithful and trusting Him that his promises about waiting will come.
