The Story
I feel we need to be constantly reminded that Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good but to make dead people alive. Christians have done a lot of good in the world, over the centuries, but many times those efforts have turned into trying to ‘take over the world’ by force or by legislation to make it a ‘better place’. Shameful things have taken place to impose certain behaviours and lifestyles on people in an attempt to purge ‘evil’ from the earth. Well, this is a bit dark isn’t it. On the other hand, many think that God requires them to be good before he will let them in. Others think that they are good enough already because they have relatively high moral standards.
Jesus changes people from the inside out, not the outside in. Sure, we can stand for what is right and fair and just but in, and out of, love not from a desire for power and control. We must also remember that this world is not our home, so maybe we can try a bit less to make it more comfortable and a bit harder to share the Good News.
Lyrics
Lord, remind me again why you died,
Why you allowed your God and Father to cry.
Lord, remind me again why you suffered in pain.
What did we have that you could possibly gain?
Was it because of our brilliant minds,
Our money, our talents or even our time.
Was it because we were so good,
So clean and so easily understood.
Was it because we don’t often swear,
We don’t curse, murder or pollute the air.
Was it because we sometimes went to church,
Gave to the poor and left no-one in the lurch.
Was it because of the clothes we wear,
Our good looks, or the fact we like to share.
Was it because we obey the law?
I’m sure there must be something more.
Lord, tell me why, oh why, oh why!
We try so hard to get others to try
All these things, but forget the reason why
You really came to the earth to die.
You loved us when we were unclean,
Helpless, selfish, godless and mean.
We had nothing to offer, nothing to give,
All that we can ask is that you will forgive.
This is the reason you really came:
To release us from all our pain.
You came to set us completely free.
You came to save and to rescue me.
Thank you Jesus for coming to die
Thank you for allowing your Father to cry,
Thank you for suffering in so much pain
So that I might have so much to gain.
Lord, tell me why, oh why, oh why!
We try so hard to get others to try
All these things, but forget the reason why
You really came to the earth to die.
