The Story
This song is based on Paul’s description of the church as Christ’s body in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. Paul is speaking out against those who think they are either too important (and overly gifted) and to those who don’t think they are important enough (who don’t seem to have valuable gifts). Everyone has a place in the body of Christ and we are to encourage, equip and help each other grow into all that Jesus has in store for us. Not one of us can represent the fullness of Christ by ourselves and no one is exempt from the loneliness that cones from trying to do it all on our own.
Be encouraged to step up or step down, to step out in faith and trust God knows what he is doing through you and in you. Seek to lead and to follow, to share and receive, to encourage and be encouraged to further God’s kingdom an experience the fullness of his love through other believers. do these things out of love for God and for love of our brothers and sisters in Christ, Be humble and yet be confident.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I don’t need you, I say to myself, or even out loud.
I’ve been told to be strong and proud.
Don’t be weak, stand on your own two feet.
Don’t ask for help or admit defeat.
Others hold you back and bring you down.
What you have is yours to keep, and never share around.
I’ll do it all on my own,
And wonder why I’m so alone.
[Verse 2]
You don’t need me, I say to myself or even out loud.
I’ve been told to never be proud.
You’re to be silent and never to speak.
You will always need help and be weak.
Others will hurt you and put you down.
What you have is yours to keep, and never share around.
I will do it all on my own
And wonder why I’m so alone.
[chorus]
I need you and you need me
We’re all part of God’s family
Working together as his body
I need you and you need me.
Share our gifts, and abilities.
Giving honour and dignity.
I need you and you need me.
Share our pain and victories.
Celebrating our diversity.
I need you and you need me.
