The Story

I wrote the lyrics for this song in 2002. It was when we had two kids two years old and under, I was studying my Theology degree and we weren’t getting any sleep due to the youngest having health issues. It seemed the hard times wouldn’t end and our prayers for healing and relief weren’t being answered. One of my lecturers commented in class one day that no one seemed to be writing laments anymore, so I went home that day and wrote this overnight. This is a song for those going through hard times and wondering where God is, just like Jesus cried on the cross My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46)

It’s easy to think God has left us when we can’t see our way out of a hole that we are in. When everything seems dark, endless and heavy, we can either choose to walk away from God or to look for him.

While God promises to never leave us (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 13:5), it often feels like he has. I don’t think God has a problem with us wondering where he is and crying out in anguish. He wants to be invited into our pain and hard times and we can know that he is there somewhere working all things for our good. (Romans 8:28)

Lyrics

Father, in these days
I am dying in pain
All around is darkness
I feel so alone
So I’m crying to you
My God, My God where are you now?

Father, in this hour
I am suffering again
I cannot see the end
I don’t understand
So I’m crying to you
My God, My God where are you now?

Father, in this moment
I’m here in agony
You seem so far away
Don’t you even care
So I’m crying to you
My God, My God where are you now?

In the midst of this hurt
Through my darkest night
Amongst this isolation
And my aching soul
I hear my Father cry

My Child, My Child, I’m feeling your pain
My Child, My Child, I’m hurting with you
My Child, My Child, I’m Crying with you
My Child, My Child, I’m here with you now!
