The Story
It is so easy to get caught up in life that we forget all the good things God has done and the good things he has given us. We forget his provision, that he created the world, that he holds the future. We forget how he has spoken to us, changed us, redeemed us and cared for us. We forget his promises, his faithfulness, the purpose he has for our lives. We forget that he is with us, is concerned for us and loves us.
God rescued the Israelites from Egypt and guided them to the Promised Land. Just before they entered, Moses knew he had to remind the people not to forget all that God had done and who he was, which is how we got the book of Deuteronomy. Moses knew that in the land of plenty, people would naturally became complacent and be distracted, see Deuteronomy 6:12. In Deuteronomy 4: 9 we read that the way not to forget is to constantly and deliberately recall and pass on the testimony of the things God has done and provided.
David writes in Psalms 103:2 “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits”. I wrote the lyrics to this song as a way of reminding myself that no matter what life brings, God has already done and given so much. I can take comfort and look forward to the future because of all that he has done. Even if the only thing he ever did was send his Son to reconcile me to the Father, that would be enough, but there is so much more.
Jesus requested that we regularly remember him, his life, death and resurrection, until he comes. Let us not forget the goodness, grace and mercy of our great God.
