The Story
It can be easy to think that the gift of salvation which God gives us through Jesus is free and easy. Sign up for a free ticket to heaven and a relatively good life is often the message preached by Christians who are well intentioned, mostly. The responsibility that comes with being a follower of Jesus , though, is far from free and easy. Many choose to ignore or downplay some of the things that Jesus says because they are too hard. Even many in Jesus day turned away from following him because what he asked was too hard, too countercultural.
Things like taking up our cross daily, laying down our life for others are challenging enough but one of the toughest things to come to terms with is that Jesus says that praying for our enemies and those that mistreat us, blessing those who persecute us and curse us is not an option, it is a command. (Matthew 5:43-48 & Luke 6:27-36). In fact, he says that praying a blessing on those who don’t like us is a key indicator that we are a follower of Jesus and that the kingdom of God has taken root in our lives.
Paul repeats Jesus words in Romans 12:14-21 and he also adds that we should leave vengeance to the Lord – the only one who sees the hearts and minds of people, therefore the only one who is in a position to be totally impartial and just.
This is a prayer to help us walk that out.
