The Story
The first version of this song was written in 2001 and it was around that time when I was leading Sunday “worship” that I incorporated it in a service. It didn’t have music to it and was more of a call and response to the finger clicking beat of a military sound off. I would make the statement e.g. “Well, he is the King of Kings” and then the instruction “Everybody sing: Hallelujah” then the congregation would chant back “Hallelujah”. It was a bold move in a more traditional church but I got some good feedback. To avoid too much repetition, I revised the structure in October this year and have grouped the statements and reduced the number of Hallelujahs but retained the audience participation in this musical version.
Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which simply means Praise the Lord. The word is used 24 times in the Old Testament, mainly in Psalms, and 4 times in Revelation.
Each of the statements in this song is a reason to praise the Lord, to proclaim his goodness and express eternal gratitude.
If you can’t see God working in your life or think of anything he has done recently, the words of this song can be helpful to remember who he is, what he has done and who we are in Christ. – and give him the thanks, the honour and the glory.
