The Story
Being a Christian and following Jesus doesn’t mean that we don’t have bad days or even bad seasons in life. Days, weeks, months even years when things don’t seem to go right for us. We are humans and living in a fallen world everything is not going to go our way all the time. Many songs written by Christians today seem to overlook the reality of life and try and fill us with positivity and overlook or even downplay the fact that life can be hard. We face difficulties, death, doubt, disability, disappointment, discouragement and we are not happy all the time, nor do we have to be. The Psalms are filled with honesty towards God about the unfairness and pain experienced in life and yet many of them end in a resolve to trust in God. He will make all things new, there will be a time when there is no more suffering or pain. For now, though, He is with us and still blesses us with His presence and His salvation, at the very least.
This song tries to capture our feelings on those bad days and, using the words of some classic hymns turns our attention to the God who is still with us, still loves us, still wants us to trust in Him.
The classic hymns are
Count Your Blessings by Johnson Oatman Jr. (1897)
Trust and Obey by John H Sammis (1887)
Jesus Loves Even Me by Philip P Bliss (1871)
