Pick and Choose

Deuteronomy 4:2

Many have done exactly this, added to or subtracted from the commands of God.  Priests and other religious leaders, from then until even today, have added to the laws. Some of which were probably with the right intent, to make sure there was no chance of breaking the original law. Other additions were more about controlling people through fear and manipulation

Subtractions, on the other hand, are more about us deciding what suits us better, what fits with our lifestyle or what makes our faith easier.

Of course, Jesus fulfilled the law and as Christians we don’t live under the law. We do, however, still pick and choose what parts of Jesus’ teachings we decide to adopt and which to leave out. We also pick and choose, often without careful prayer and consideration, which of Jesus’ apostles teachings we pay attention to or disregard.

And then we wonder why we are not making a difference in the world! Read a bit further through to verse 8 and we see that the outcome of trusting God at his word is that the world sits up and takes notice. Through our obedience and trust, the world sees wisdom, understanding and the presence of God in our lives.

So, what are you adding to God’s good news? What part of your life are you deciding not to trust God in?
