Blessings for who?

Numbers 6:24-27

Who does not want to be blessed?

After all, blessings are good things that benefit us and make our lives easier, aren’t they? We feel blessed when we receive something of value, when someone treats us well and when we get help, especially if we don’t ask for it.

A blessing often looks like an increase to our bank account, the ability to purchase that thing we have always wanted. Or, we are able to buy that product we urgently needed, or pay the bill that was causing us so much stress.

A blessing looks like good health, either avoiding some sort of sickness or condition, or being healed of it, so we can do the things we like to do.

A blessing may look like an ability to carry out a task, or a breakthrough at work and a last minute reprieve from a commitment we weren’t looking forward to.

But according to today’s verse, this is only part of the whole picture because in v27 we see the purpose of blessing – ‘so that they will put my name on the Israelites’. The higher purpose of blessings are that those around us see God working in us and through us. Blessing in our life is meant to glorify God, not simply to benefit us. Each blessing is a testimony to share of God’s goodness, provision, faithfulness, presence, peace and protection.

We do not deserve and cannot demand blessings, we can simply and openly give thanks to our Father for every blessing he gives to us, his children.

If we are keeping our blessings to ourselves and not sharing them with others, we are not walking in His will.

It’s one thing to count your blessings, but what are you doing with them?
