Take a Break

Exodus 34:21

In our busy world, rest can be seen as lazy, unproductive and weak. This is especially so when the to-do list never ends, profits are at stake and business success is dependent on everyone giving 130%.

To ensure that we have the capacity to perform our daily tasks, we load up with coffee and or energy drinks, burn the midnight oil during the week and work weekends just to keep our heads above water.

The busiest time on a farm is during seeding and harvest. The quality, quantity and maximum value of the crop depends on getting the seed in the ground as quickly and as efficiently as possible, at the right time. To make the most of the yields, the crop needs to be harvested as soon as it is ripe and before fire or rain or pests destroy or damage it. In both seeding and harvest, there is a small window of time that the farmer has to work with for the optimum gain. Yet even in these critical times of year, God instructs the Israelites to rest – even though there is plenty of time after and before to take a break.

God knows that we need rest, and it takes faith to trust him in that. Rest not only refreshes and revitalises us, but it also shows those around us that we are obedient to our Creator. It gives God the opportunity to work in us, through us, and despite us.

Can you imagine what one day a week without stressing about work would feel like? One day a week without time pressures and deadlines, how about that? One day a week, to focus on God and family and friends and yourself. Give it a try and see what God does while you take a break.
