Exodus 34:9b
The word and concept of “wicked” has flipped. Now, it is often used as an exclamation to describe something or some achievement as being good, enjoyable, or extraordinary.
When Moses begged God to forgive Israel’s wickedness, he was referring to the things they were doing that, while possibly enjoyable, were rebellious and insulting to His holiness.
Moses knew that repentance, even at this early stage, was that this was the only way to walk with God, to receive his favour and to join in the inheritance of his kingdom.
Understanding in our hearts and minds that sin is abhorrent to God, that it repulses him and that cannot coexist with him, is the start to realising how much we are in need of a Saviour.
From this understanding, our first step is to ask for and accept His forgiveness, which was made possible through Jesus’ death and resurrection.
From there, the journey begins as, with the help of His spirit, we press towards the lifelong goal of being as disgusted with sin and wickedness as our God is. Mind you, the focus is first and foremost having that attitude towards sin in our own lives.
