All the Honour

Exodus 20:24 “Wherever I cause my name to be honoured, I will come to you and bless you.”

God has come to us, through Jesus and then the Holy Spirit. He has blessed us with salvation, life, provision and many other things. In other words He has reversed this statement.

I wonder how often we stop to think of the bountiful goodness of God and to honour Him, to thank Him, to praise Him.

The Israelites were told to sacrifice valuable sheep, goats and cattle in recognition of their thankfulness to God. This showed that they did not hold anything in higher value than God and that their dependence was in Him alone. It was a public display of honouring God, acknowledging His presence and His blessing.

Yet I tend to take the blessings of God for granted and gravitate towards using everything I have of value for myself rather than giving back to God. I am happy to take the credit for my abilities and achievements and am slow or even silent in giving thanks to God.

Thankfully, His blessing is not proportionally dependant on what I do or don’t do, but perhaps we are missing out on the fullness of His blessing and His presence by not publically honouring and acknowledging Him and what He has done, as much as we could.
