Exodus 20:20 “so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
Unlike the Israelites when they were at the foot of Mt Sinai, not many of us experience the presence of God in a way that causes us to tremble in fear.
We prefer to dwell on God’s love and his grace and his mercy and forgiveness, which is all true. However, to fully experience all of that we must begin to grasp His holiness, His perfection and his complete hostility toward sin.
As we realise how serious sin is to God, how far from God we were, we will never fully appreciate what it meant for Him to send His Son to die for us.
For those who have accepted Jesus as their Saviour and made Him Lord of their life, we don’t need to fear the judgement and punishment of God, as the Israelites did. We do need to remember, though, how far we fall short of His standards in our own strength and how much it breaks His heart when we choose to sin.
