Genesis 9:3 “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything”
After the flood God gave humankind permission to eat anything that moves – anything!?. Later on He restricts that diet for the people of Israel. I find it interesting to reflect on how different cultures have different values or different views on what should be eaten or not. In Western culture we turn our noses up at the thought of eating grasshoppers or sheep eyeballs. We might consider those who eat such things as uncivilised, while in another part of the world these may either be staples or delicacies.
Do we judge the intelligence and worth of people based on what animals or part of animals they eat? It seems a bit divisive to me, especially since God originally said ‘anything that moves’.
In Acts 10, God tells Peter that he is free to eat anything again, in order to be able to hang out with people who are not like him and tell them about Jesus. Could that be a challenge to us, to not separate ourselves from others or think more highly of ourselves based on what we do or do not like to eat or drink or do, so that others may know about Jesus.
Who knows, in doing so we might also find our new favourite food?🤪
