John 3:17
I don’t know how many times I have heard people say that if they went to church the building would collapse, because they were expecting divine condemnation and judgement for their life choices. There are at least three misconceptions with this expectation. The first is that avoiding church does not hide one from God’s sight. We are all seen and heard and known by God wherever we are. Secondly is that church is not defined by a building but by God’s people. A church building is a resource for facilitating meetings, programs and other types of ministry. It is not something that should be worshipped or considered essential for a church’s identity and purpose. Thirdly and most importantly is that God should be known more for his compassion than condemnation, more for his acceptance than anger, more for his love than his loathing and more for his welcoming than wrath.
