Romans 15:5-6
Living in peace and harmony is an ideal which many wish for but have resolved it to be unacheivable. If only selfish ambition and personal opinion could simply and magically disappear then life would be bliss. A utopia of selfless cooperation, unified thoughts and harmonious community would lack division, arrogance and violence. It would quite possibly also be boring unless everyone was committed to a greater and higher purpose. A purpose where they were all working together to achieve the same goal. A purpose which drew them together and kept them together. A purpose which encouraged growth and drew out the best in each other. This is what we are called to as followers of Jesus and the writer of today’s verse is under no illusions that this simply just happens. We need the encouragement from God to endure disappointment, overcome discouragement and to work through issues that cause division. This is not primarily for our own sake but for the honour of the One who made and sustains us.
