Letting your tongue loose

Proverbs 13:3

Most of us have at some time or another said something that we have regretted. Others do this on a more regular basis. One would think that because it is so common we would be quick to forgive and be readily understanding of others who let things out and later want to take them back. This is not the case. We all hold each other accountable for the words we speak. Inappropriate words cut deep and remain in our memories for a long time often shaping our lives. Why don’t we think more deeply before verbalising our shallow thoughts? Perhaps we are afraid of missing the opportunity or that we will forget what we were going to say. Perhaps we feel superior or justified in what we have to say. Perhaps we don’t care at the time about how the other person might respond. Sometimes we can simply underestimate the person’s response or their interpretation of what we say. Wouldn’t we all be better off if we took time to reflect before reacting and to think before we speak?
