Two wrongs

You may have heard the saying “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” I am certain I learnt this at an early age and I wonder if the origin comes from this verse in the Bible. Revenge and retaliation seem to be natural responses when we are wronged. Instead of waiting for or being content with justice we want to get even. The thing about getting even is that it is usually subjective and emotive which distorts our assessment of the motive and intent of those that have wronged us. Justice on the other hand is objective and considers all the facts before determining the response. Most of us would prefer justice when we are at fault but prefer revenge when someone else is. Doesn’t sound quite right does it? As followers of Jesus we are called to be defined and recognised by justice. This often means doing good to people when we don’t feel like they deserve it.
