Dark secrets have the power to control our life and make us into people we don’t want to be. They captivate our imagination and we play out worst case scenarios in our mind leading us into patterns of thought that are unhealthy but make sense to us. So we cover them up by burying them deeper or distracting our attention with other more socially acceptable but still unhealthy actions or addictions. Everything can appear to be okay on the outside but inside we can be fighting a battle which drains our energy and sucks the life out of our relationships. Who knew that the answer to the burden of dark secrets is not to hide them, forget them or ignore them but to expose them. Exposing our secrets seems to be counterintuitive, unnatural and unnecessarily painful but it works – in the right environment. In the context of real friends and sincere trust, letting out those dark secrets is powerful, healing and freeing. It not only makes you feel lighter but it releases you from your condemning imagination and deepens your relationships. Once in the light your secrets can be addressed, acknowledged and accepted. Then you are free to move on in life and equipped to help others who have similar problems.
