We all make time for what is important to us. When we say yes to something it means we are saying no to something else. Through our life our priorities change and what was important once upon a time is no longer as valuable to us. This change can be positive or negative depending on what is getting the attention and what or who is missing out. For example, when we first found the love of our life we wanted to spend every moment of the day with them. Perhaps after a season of time we begin to prefer staying at work or spending more time with other people rather than our spouse. This situation could mean that things are not so good at home or that other priorities just seem more beneficial or exciting. Priorities can shift gradually or all of a sudden and so it is important to reflect and reassess on a regular basis to ensure that any shift of priorities is not having a negative affect on what is most important and of most value. I believe the writer of this proverb is telling us that God desires us to make him our first priority and our first love. When we do that we are less likely to do, think and say things that separate us from him and others.
