Hundreds of years before Jesus walked the earth it was predicted that he would not be popular. He started off the crowd favourite but it soon became apparent that he was not the superhero that everyone was hoping for. He wasn’t going to rescue the nation of Israel from the oppression of Rome, he didn’t abolish slavery, he didn’t punish the wrong doers, he didn’t combat racism or rally against injustice. He simply claimed that he was God and that there was a different and better way to live which was enough to turn the crowds against him. It wasn’t until his resurrection that it all began to make sense to his few followers. It has been a hallmark of the growth of God’s kingdom that his followers will not be popular either. We must remember though to choose carefully what we are unpopular for.
