As much as we would like to think that we are unique, we are actually a product of our surroundings. Our culture, experience, family and friends shape how we think and what we do. We don’t often stop and think for ourselves ‘Why am I who I am?’ Or ‘Why do I think what I think?’ Or ‘Why do I do what I do?’ Now some would argue that we shouldn’t ask those questions because we are who we are and we shouldn’t have to or want to change. What if there was a different way of life that was better? What if our culture and experience wasn’t the best after all? What if we were missing out on a richer fuller life? As followers of Jesus, its not about dressing in a certain style, liking a specific genre of music, doing church in a particular tradition or adopting western ways. What we are called to do is to be influenced by Him not by our surroundings. This takes a determined effort to ask those questions and seriously consider who we are becoming and how we are being shaped. Are we happy to conform or are we seeking to be transformed?
