Being convinced

A manager that I used to have often replied ‘I am not convinced’ in answer to proposals or ideas for which he needed more information or persuasion. Being convinced means knowing beyond doubt that something is true and that it will work, that it is achievable and worth the investment. With all the ideas, religions, philosophies and debates being posted on Facebook, discussed on the news and life in general it can be difficult to be convinced about anything. There are two opposing problems here. One is that it is difficult to convince a convicted person that there might be another way or ideas. The second is that to not be convinced about something means that you can be led to believe anything. Strong convictions generally lead to aggressive defence but Paul, who wrote the words highlighted today, had such conviction about the love and presence of God that he was prepared to go through hell on earth in order to convince others of that love. Perhaps we are not as convinced as we thought we were.
