As children we clung to the security of our favourite soft and cuddly toy or blanket. It provided comfort and courage in a big and sometimes lonely world. It would help us sleep at night and calm our fears of the dark. Growing up though we left those childish ways behind us because we began to realise that they didn’t really provide any protection at all. However, without knowing it we might have taken on other things which are meant to help us through life but look more like biting our nails, smoking, drinking alcohol, pornography, work, drugs and so on. These things can seem to offer a hiding place, comfort and even courage to handle the big amd sometimes lonely world. Just like the soft toy or the blanket they only make us feel better for a short time but really don’t help with the real issues we face. God, however, can provide real comfort, real protection and real courage because of His power, presence and purpose. He helps us overcome our circumstances rather than leave us to be overwhelmed by them.
