Money, money, money

If you haven’t got it, you want it. If you do have it, it’s never enough. If you don’t have it, you can’t do much. If you have some, it’s better than none but we can always do with more. If you have lots of it you use it up pretty quickly.  Money.   It is definitely a rich man’s world.  Money makes the world go round.  It generally makes the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.  What is it about money and wealth that is so attractive and desirable?  Why is enough never enough?  Why is there always something else to buy, obtain or use?  There is an attraction, even an addiction that our culture thrives on and that is, the need for more.  More security, more influence, more comfort, more stuff, more bigger and more better.  Generally it’s more for me rather than more for everybody else.  The desire for more overrides our values, compassion, thoughtfulness and at times our common sense.  In a twist of irony it erodes our satisfaction, contentment and enjoyment of life rather than increasing them.  As follower’s of Jesus, we are called to put money in its proper place and learn to enjoy a life trusting in the One who does actually make the world go around, the One who knows what we really need and the One who provides for us when we need it.  Money is then viewed as a blessing to receive rather than the goal to achieve.
