Just imagine for a a moment if you were completly free to live out your first response. Your first response to someone who cuts in front of you in a queue and you miss out on ticket to the big event. Your first response when you think you have been lied to, cheated on or robbed. Your first response to seeing a fit and very physically attractive person. Your first response to an easily available stash of cash from someone in a vulnerable situation. How did you go? You might have gratified your seemingly natural urges for revenge, sex and money but think of the hurt you have caused and the trail of destruction you left behind. Would you really feel better for following through on your first response? Maybe briefly but you would soon live a lonely and regretful life. The responses that Jesus calls for don’t necessarily feel natural at the time but lead to a life of healthy relationships and very few regrets. We need to listen to his Spirit for the best response and the best outcome for us and those around us.
