“I will make it up to you” is a pretty common response to someone we have let down, disappointed or hurt. It can be said in a sincere attempt to express repentance for a lapse in judgement or it can simply be a way of trying to cover over a deliberate act or behaviour. Making up usually involves us giving the other person our time, talent or treasure in order to smooth over the wrong caused. Either way the person we have wronged would have preferred us to do the right thing in the first place and it would be less costly for us too. It can be easy for us to slip into the ‘make it up to you’ attitude towards God too. We can choose to live a life taking His forgiveness for granted and live how we feel like or we can show our appreciation for his forgiveness by choosing to live out what is right and just.
To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
