What about purity?

In a bizarre sort of way purity is looked down on, disregarded and you could say almost considered dirty to most people.  Take a look around at the media, Internet and even your own social circle and you will discover that lewd, crude and rude are not only evident but prolific.  As much as those and other behaviours and attitudes are obviously leading to a society that is unsafe, unhealthy and unfair, any suggestion of purity is ridiculed and rejected.  Try raising the level of conversation out of the gutter in your workplace or suggesting abstinence from sex before marriage or challenging someone about their anger issues.  Would you expect a welcome and friendly response?  I have found that while people generally don’t like their impure thoughts and actions challenged they tend to have at least some respect for those that live out a higher standard as long as it is not in an aloof way.  Regardless of our reception, as Jesus followers we are called to live a life of purity which is made possible as we are guided by Him to get rid of those things in our life which He considers unhealthy, unsafe and unfair.
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
