Children often follow in the footsteps of their parents whether they like it or not. The values, lifestyle, morals, habits and even addictions are generally passed down from one generation to the next. I have seen many children stuck in a generational cycle of poverty, abuse, welfare dependancy and a reliance on alcohol and drugs. To break out of this generational cycle it will take a determined decision, some pain and heartache and the encouragement of an outside positive influence. The exact opposite is generally true for those who grow up in a house where there is good values, healthy habits and a good income. A significant difference is that there is an attraction to the dark side which is stronger than the pull to the better life in the reverse situation. Proverbs are not promises but are general observations about life. Those of us who try and raise our kids God’s way can take encouragement that even though things may not look great now, at the very least they will know where to turn when they realise the grass is not really greener on the other path.
Train a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
