The Bible can be a daunting book. It can seem so long and the words so small. It is not really a book that reads like a novel which also puts people off. I wonder how many have started to read it from the start and have given up because it just got too hard. How many have been put off by simply looking at and how many have been not even tried because of what they have heard about it? Even many of those if not most who identify as a Christian find it difficult to be motivated to read the Bible from cover to cover. Instead, small bits of it are extracted and repeated and referenced like one would with a book of quotes or a book of recipies or a book of rules. Memorising small chunks of the Bible is helpful but only if the whole is understood. The Bible is a compilation of 66 different pieces of literature including historical records, poems, songs, sayings, stories, letters and more which contribute to an unfolding story from the beginning of time to the end which reveals the relationship between God and humanity. There are some parts which are captivating, others controversial and some just hard work but being familiar with the whole is essential to understanding the parts. I would encourage you to use the tools, guides and experts which are many to get familiar with the whole Bible not just the parts which make you feel good or support your arguments. Just read it – it might change your life.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 NIV
