There was a song quite a few years ago that had the line “Love is, what you want it to be.” We all want to be loved and yet expectations of what that looks like are many and varied. Some of the major variations are explained in a book called “The Five Love Languages”. Whatever your definition or expectation of love is, it is sure to cost someone something. It maybe their time, energy or money. It might cost them relationships with others, their own enjoyment or their own comfort. However you measure love it ultimately is measured in what it costs. Love makes us feel valued and value has a price. As followers of Jesus we are called to lay down our lives for each other just as he did for us. He displayed the ultimate act of love, the ultimate display of how much he valued us. Are we willing to acknowledge what his love cost? Are we able to show the same dedication, commitment and sacrifice to each other?
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
