Probably the most common reference to temptation these days is regarding food. I often hear people saying they are trying not to be tempted or have given into the temptation of eating or drinking something they shouldn’t be having. Temptation is only really obvious when we know the good we should be doing but doing something else seems to be more attractive, fulfilling or enjoyable. Often we get to the point of not realising we are tempted because either our standards have changed or we have decided that the perceived minimal conequences of giving in are not worth the struggle of fighting against the temptation. Life can certainly seem easier if we don’t have to worry about looking for or standing against temptation. Regardless of whether we recognise temptation or not or whether we treat it seriously or not, it is real and constant. It is forever dragging us away from a better life and taking us down a track that becomes self indulgent and destructive for ourselves and those around us.
And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.
