It seems only natural to protect, promote and provide for ourselves. After all, who else is going to do these things for us? Who else knows or cares what our desires, dreams and needs are? There is nothing wrong with pursuing the best life possible except when that pursuit prevents others from the same privilege. Everything we do affects someone else and as followers of Jesus we are called to consider that before we go chasing after own things. It may be frustrating to wait in a queue or sacrifice our position in order for someone else to go before us. It might be difficult to go without so another can have something they need. It can feel like we are missing out, that we might be taken advantage of or that it is unfair. It is quite amazing though that when this principle is put into practise life seems so much more fulfilling. There is a real sense of purpose and a lot less regret when we consider the impact of what we do on our family, friends and even strangers.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4 NIV
