A song released a few years ago by OneRepublic has a line that went “Everything that kills me makes me feel alive.” A pastor I listen to says “If you don’t enjoy sin then you are not doing it right” Both these statements point to the instant gratification of doing, using, saying or thinking stuff that we know is not really right but makes us feel good even if it is only for a short time. If we continue to do, use, say or think these things they will lead to the terminal soul sicknesses of regret, shame, hurt, desperation, broken relationships, guilt and even physical death. These are this lifetime’s payoff for a living a life that is opposite to the one God designed when he made us. There are also eternal consequences. However, at any time we can embrace the gift of God which is a permanent and eternal cure for the soul sickness of sin. It will mean giving up those things that led to the sickness but your quality of life here and beyond the grave will be improved out of this world.
For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
