Expectations

Even those who don’t believe in God have a preconceived idea about the God they don’t believe in. Perhaps a reason they don’t believe is because the God they thought they believed in didn’t do what they thought he should have done. Usually the declaration goes “If God is love why doesn’t he….?” or “If God is good then why does he allow…?”  Yesterday was Palm Sunday on the Christian calender which is traditionally the Sunday before Easter.  It was an event where the people of Israel showed that their expectation of Jesus was that he become their King and overthrow the oppressive Roman invaders.  After all he was popular, persuasive and powerful which were considered vital attributes for a great rescuer and leader.  They were soon to be disappointed that he wasn’t who they thought he was and so not long after this event they turned on him instead of supporting him. It turns out that who they thought was going to be simply king of Israel is now considered by Christians to be King of the universe. While you may or may not believe that, please consider that just because God isn’t who you think he should be perhaps your pereception is not what it could be.
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
