Helping people can be the most rewarding thing we do in life. At the same time though it can expose us to the possibility of feeling unappreciated, used and vulnerable. When our help is taken for granted or they don’t say thank you or we don’t get noticed or they have a go at us for not doing it right we can quickly become hurt and discouraged. It can be difficult to be motivated to help when we don’t like the person or they don’t like us or they can’t help us in return. As followers of Jesus our motivation to help others is based on knowing how much God loves us and understanding how much he loves others. Our motivation and sense of fulfillment then is not dependant on the reaction of the one we help but in the recognition from the God we serve. Knowing that God knows and that he sees and that he won’t forget and that he will acknowledge our efforts and that he appreciates us helps us to help others. Being offended or hurt when our help is rejected or unappreciated could mean that we are helping more for our own satisfaction than for the benefit of the one we are helping.

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
